WALL
Na h-Eileanan Siar

Description

A short length of probable wall eroding out of the sand section, surrounded by shell midden. It is not visible within the hinterland behind the sand section. Update visit December 2015 There now appear to be two distinct areas of ?wall eroding out of the Northern escarpment slope on the northern end of the peninsula. The more easterly section can be traced up from the shoreline up the slope some 10-12 metres. It seems likely that these residual portions of wall might be associated with an enclosure to a settlement building which remains covered within the dune. There was limited evidence of midden material associated with both portions discovered, mostly shell remains with some bone fragments, some of which were carbonised.

Keep observation of the site to examine for any further uncovering of archaeological materials/remains/features
Comments The site is very close to the public footpath through the RSPB Balranald reserve, and although the site is not obvious, it probably has a relatively high footfall locally
