Stone spread
60244
Argyll and Bute

Description

A linear spread of rounded and angular stones runs across the base of a blow out among sand dunes. Aligned NW-SE, it extends for 22m and is between 2m and 3m wide. There are no anthropogenic soils or deposits visibly associated with the spread and the only reason for suspecting that it might be structural in nature is the fact that the area is otherwise free of stone. ShoreUPDATE 24/06/2015 Substantial shell midden approx. 7m x 25m x 1m high. Forms a low oval/crescent shaped mound at landward edge base of large blowout. A spread of cobble and boulder sized stone (as described above) is present to the west and south of the shell mound. Large fragments of coarse decorated prehistoric pot were visible across the shell mound. This looks very similar to the Early Bronze Age pottery from Kilellan Farm excavations (Ritchie, 2005). A sample of the pottery was collected for analysis. Fire-cracked stone present but not in large quantities. No lithics were seen on the day despite searching.
