Description

A mound, highly likely to be a chambered cairn, measuring 20m long and standing up to 1m high, has been truncated by the sea. The surviving portion measures about 8m wide. The coastal exposure contains structural remains, including several columns of masonry, which have collapsed in-situ, along with edge-set blocks and upright slabs. Towards the centre of this 25m long exposure, there are remnants of coursed walling which stands up to 0.7m high. A large horizontal slab which is located to the south end of the section may be part of a larger feature. This site is highly vulnerable to further damage and requires urgent assessment. 06/07/2014 ShoreUPDATE As described. Possibly more exposed than in the 1998 survey. Dry stone structural remains at least 1m high form low mound upon 2-3m of till overlying bedrock. No sign of midden material. On the east side of the mound, 3 upright slabs could form chambers. Horizontal slabs could form the roof of a passage. Looks like a chambered cairn.

Located upon rock and till coast edge, elevated from beach level. Has obviously been damaged in the past, but most vulnerable to extreme weather events. Re-assign Priority 2.
