Description

A very large number of 13th-15th century pottery fragments, now in Dumfries Museum, have been found at Redkirk Point (NY 302 651) as the tide erodes it. A fragment of fused-sand and lead silicate also found here possibly indicates kiln sites. A E Truckell and J Williams 1967; J Williams 1967; 1968. These sherds were found on the shore in the area centred NY 302 651. They are still in Dumfries Museum. Visited by OS (JP) 23 June 1970. Pottery in Dumfries Museum (1971/38). Trans Dumfriesshire Galloway Natur Hist Antiq Soc 1972. Some 363 sherds of medieval pottery (13-15th century in date) and other medieval artefacts have been found at Redkirk Point. RCAHMS 1981. ShoreUPDATE Feb 2019 As previous ShoreUPDATE description. Erosion is ongoing, but no cultural material seen except for fragments of obviously late drains and bricks, likely from dumping as part of coastal defence.

Comments SCAPE officers have visited site twice, and no cultural material has been visible. Site may have been eroded away. Difficult to identify site - intertidal shingle has many ceramic piecies but most of these seem to be from land drains and bricks possibly tipped as part of sea defence.
