A circa 15m length of wall located in the intertidal zone, oriented E-W perpendicular to the coast edge. The wall is constructed of a line of very large edge set slabs. On either side, a circa 5m diameter area of smaller edge set slabs may function to secure the wall which appears to be constructed directly upon the rock platform. The feature is almost certainly the remains of a wall depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch and 6 inch OS, surveyed in 1900, although NOT on the 1st edition OS surveyed in 1879. In 1900 it was contiguous with the coast edge. Now at least 40m separates the surviving portion from the coast edge. It may be related to ruinous 18th/19th century farm buildings at the coast edge here, or to undated dry stone structures being exposed in the coastal section (site 6681). The style of construction using vertically set slabs is similar to the style of construction used in historic coastal defenses. e.g. at Northskaill 6818 |
