Mound and coastal exposure

Description

A poorly defined low mound c100m long by 10-30m wide following the line of the coast at the point by Crow Taing, Tofts Ness, Sanday. The land is a maximum of c1m higher than surrounding ground. There are three exposures and one stone drain on the coastal side of this raised ground. These are (E-W); 1. Eastern exposure HY 74673 46419 – HY74702 46448. Midden material (large animal bone, shells and charcoal in dark organic earth matrix) and possible structural rubble. 2. Stone drain at HY 74668 46407. 3. Middle exposure HY 74665 46383 (centred, c7m long)- midden material with high charcoal content. 4. Western exposure HY 74666 46356 (centred, c18m long)- windblown sand and section of walling/revetment. No artefacts were observed. FEB 2015- human remains identified eroding from the section- AOC are investigating.

Monitoring. Ideally test-pitting /geophysics to establish landward extent.
Comments Does not appear to be on Canmore although site slightly known locally.
