Description

Remains of the old track are visible in the hinterland as a grass covered flat linear feature. Remains also noted eroding out of top of dune. Consists of a shallow cut c. 0.2 m deep containing a cobbled surface & coal ash. Unknown width in section due to partial collapse of dune. Has been previously investigated by Clyne Heritage Society. ShoreUPDATE: Part of the 18th century salt pans described under record [11937]. Depicted by John Kirk in 1772 as an 'Intended Waggon Road' to carry salt from the pans to Brora Harbour. Excavations in 2009 identified the road. The full width of the road measured 4.75m, oriented NNE-SSW. The cobbled base was 3m wide, overlain by a series of layers of highly compacted coal dust to from a smooth surface. The road is a prominent feature visible eroding out of the coast edge as a thick black deposit underlain by cobbles. Visited 2018 & 2019 As described, coast edge is eroding, and roadway visible in section
